Adam, Eve & God’s Design for Marriage
According to the Book of Genesis, Adam and Eve were the first humans and all humans have descended from them. Adam and Eve were created by God to take care of his creation, to populate the earth, and to have a relationship with him. Their very names indicate their roles. In Hebrew, Adam comes from the word for “man” and Eve comes from the word for “life.”
In Genesis 2, we read:
But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. (Genesis 2:20-24)
Later in the New Testament, Jesus himself references Adam and Eve and God’s design for marriage, when he says,
Haven’t you read, that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)
In this era of non-traditional relationships, unions, partnerships, and family units, it’s nice to be reminded of God’s design for marriage and parenting — right from the beginning.
